BSC RACE RESULTS
PRO: Jim Pewitt On a beautiful autumn day for racing, winds were light to moderate (4-7MPH) out of the North with a few low hanging clouds providing some welcome sun shade. Winds, initially shifting all the way from North to South with a stop at West, fortunately stabilized out of the North at the last moment, producing a square line and a windward course straight up the channel. The course started at a point toward the dam from BSC, went upwind to a turning mark near Rabbit Branch, and returned downwind to a finish in the starting area. Eighteen boats turned out, of which six were one design dinghy or keel boats crewed and driven by Learn to Sail class members, with a BSC member along as coach. Eight auxiliary and four one design boats made up the BSC member boat fleet, which started first, followed by a second start for Learn to Sail class boats. For a distance race, there was more than the usual interaction of boats both upwind and down, and as the finish times reveal, very close handicap racing competition.

However, the results, revealed below, caused more than one observer to wonder if  John Acton had not somehow disguised his new J22 as a Macgregor 26, and if Rick Scarborough's and his red Buccaneer were not really a red sunset disappearing over the horizon.  Actually, Rick made it through freaky winds in the Clear Creek area with two brilliant tacks, took a lead on both fleets, and never looked back to take first place overall and first place in One Design Class. John Acton sailed consistently to take first place in the Auxiliary Boats, and Trent Richardson crewed awesomely, leaving the "newbies" to drive his J22 to first place in the Performance Keel Boat Class. Michael Papp demonstrated his superior teaching  technique with LTS student, Jennifer Hill, coming in second overall and first place in the Learn to Sail class competition.  Kudos to the race committee, headed by Pro Jim Pewitt with an assist by Vice Commodore John Gilliom.  Special thanks to Jim's sons, Joseph and James who helped set marks and monitor the finish line.

25 Comments:  Race comments provided by Bo Smith, Bill Berry, and John Gilliom.  See the next HornBlower for more on this colorful event.  Column AA are the final positions for the event across both the boats skippered by members (top) and the boats skippered by the Learn to Sail students.  Note that four of the top ten overall positions were captured by LTS boats.  Although the fleets were sailed as one, individual fleets were awarded trophies by grouping members of the class and taking the top finisher in each class.  Class winners are shown in Purple italics!

INSTRUCTIONS
Enter data in yellow fields only
Boat Type must be entered using the list box.  If the boat is not in the list, it must be added to the portsmouth table
The Wind Speed range for each race must also be selected from the list box
A skipper for each boat must be listed.  Corrected times will not calculate if skipper is blank.
Sail number is optional.  Use the Boat/Skipper cross reference to verify information.
Enter race date.  Use date of first race for two-day regattas
Enter total lapse time using the format shown at the top of the column.  If no time is available, enter appropriate code i.e. DNF
Acceptable codes are limited to DNS, DNF, and DSQ
The corrected time is calculated using the Portsmouth factor from the table using Boat Type and Wind Speed.
The Portsmouth factor can be checked by expanding the column to the left of the Lapse Time
The IF statements included in the formulas are used primarily to eliminate the Errors when no data is available.
The IF Statements check if the Skipper is present and a Wind Speed selected to determine if the calculations should be executed.
