from Kathleen Rodgers:
The Rock Paper Scissors Regatta was a huge success. Forty-five junior
sailors traveled to our club from Arkansas, Florida, Louisiana, Tennessee,
Georgia and Alabama. With parents and siblings, we hosted close to 100
visitors at our facility. Ten of the sailors are recent BSC Junior Camp
participants. The weekend offered good wind, great sailing (eight races were
completed on the Championship course and seven races on the Green Fleet
course) and fun on and off the water. Nationally renowned Optimist experts
Tom and Tommy Coleman coached the beginning racers on the Green Fleet course
and ran a clinic for advanced racers Sunday afternoon. The event would not
have been possible without the help of many parents and club members. Both
race committees, headed by Michael Papp and Jack Rogers, ran excellent
courses. Other race committee members included Larry Van Horn, Jim Deuel,
John McCary, Jerry Hart, Dianne Hart, Steve Powell, Matt Sheffield, and Bruce
Partington. The meals were prepared and served by Linda Lambert and Nice
Shindo, with help from Connie Livingston and Patty Callahan. Sue Powell helped with registration and
anything else I needed. |
| Matt
Sheffield, Mike Moers, and Tom Callahan helped pull the sailors down the
75 foot slip-n-slide-of-doom (a great
hit). Also, big thanks to Abby and Maddie Sheffield (Matt Sheffield's
daughters) who volunteered throughout Saturday to help the Green fleet
sailors, prepare meals and perform slip-n-slide duty. Thanks to all the other
parents for their support and help. All of the participants had a great time
and enjoyed our wonderful club. I look forward to a great event next
year.
Vice Commodore's Comments: With a truly clubwide effort, led by Kathleen and Jack
Rodgers, this event has grown from 20 boats at inception to 44 boats
competing this year from all over the Southeast. Not only does this event provide a valuable
racing experience for our juniors, it also introduces a large group of
parents to our club, including many who sail class boats represented at our
club. Hats
off to our Junior program! |
