Tom Reich Award

Tom Reich, son of Club members Marilyn and Harry Reich, grew up in the Birmingham Sailing Club, crewing with the family and then competing as a junior sailor through high school. He went on to collegiate sailing and was Captain of the National Championship Tulane Sailing Team in 1975 and 1976. After working several years in Europe, Tom returned home, competing in both Laser and Thistle fleets.

Tom died in 1986 at the age of 33 of Hodgkin's Disease.

This trophy, donated by his friend and co-sailor, Tad Bailey, stands as a reminder to the Club of those qualities of sportsmanship, friendliness and courtesy that Tom exemplified and are so essential to the sport of sailing.

The Tom Reich Sportsmanship Trophy is given annually to a Club member who exhibits these same qualities.  Past awardees are:
