Gulf Yachting Association Race Program

Eduardo Cordero, Emma Reich, and David Reich racing at the GYA Chandler Regatta May 31st and June 1st.

The Gulf Yachting Association was organized to promote the sport of yacht racing on the Gulf Coast and nearby areas. Founded in 1901 and reorganized in 1920, the GYA has grown from the original six clubs to over thirty member organizations. The GYA sanctions various yacht events, including interclub competition in Flying Scots, and serves to coordinate the activities of its members.

The GYA is a member of the United States Sailing Association, the governing body of the sport in this country, and is recognized as a member "yacht racing association" of that organization. In this capacity, the GYA provides representation to the national body for Gulf Coast sailors, runs quarter-final eliminations for national championships sanctioned by US Sailing, and provides an Appeals Committee to hear and decide appeals involving the racing rules.

The GYA is one of four yacht racing associations forming "Area D," one of eleven "Areas" in the United States. Areas have a representative on the Board of Directors of the United States Sailing Association and the same individual serves as a member of the Council of Sailing Associations, an important representative body within US Sailing. Areas are geographical delineations within the jurisdiction of US Sailing that serve many functions in the administration of the sport.

BSC participates in the GYA Capdevielle competition, a series of 16 regattas each year held at Gulf Coast clubs and raced in club-owned Flying Scots. http://www.gya.org

BSC GYA NEWS:

BSC GYA support boat and crew

Greeting BSC Sailors,

Welcome to the 2009 GYA Capedeville Racing Season. We have many regattas to go to and lots to accomplish this year!

First, off I would like to thank everyone at BSC for the support last year. We had a great season finishing as the Murray Trophy winners at the 2008 Sir Thomas Lipton Championships in Bay St. Louis, MS. This is awarded to the most improved team and BSC deserved it finishing 7th in a very tough fleet of about 30 teams.

We WILL finish in the Top 5 this year. This is going to take work and lots of support from our club. I will be sharing my 2009 GYA Program goals in an upcoming email but first, below is posted the schedule for the 2009 Capedeville Racing (as also posted on the club website and at www.gya.org). Please take a look and see if something interests you. I am especially looking to have a BSC team soon for the Pat Gilliland Regatta in Jackson MS in April. This is a regatta where some of our BSC "Lake Sailors" can surely go there and give the "coasties" a lesson or two. Please let me know if you would like to take the boat to Jackson in April.

BSC is planning to head to New Orleans this weekend for the Mardi Gras Regatta to kick-off the 2009 season. I know that everyone at BSC wishes our team the best for a safe and successful 2009 racing season in one of the best and most competitive sailing organizations in the US - the Gulf Yachting Association.
