Thistle Fleet Day Report
March 3 2008
It doesn't get much better than this weekend and I'm glad so many of you took advantage of it. In the middle of winter you get to go sailing, swimming (2 of us anyway) and then relaxing on the veranda in your shorts and flip flops.
Distance race: I wasn't trying to emulate the sailing video I sent out earlier but from all reliable accounts I was pretty close. And yes, the water is cold. Thanks to Rachel for being a good sport. The good was I got to watch the finish as a spectator and see five Thistles screaming to the finish line all within a couple of minutes of each other. Loy and Leslie nipped David and Harry at the finish and were followed closely by Chris and Sarah, Mike and Jack, and Nelson and Kim. Loy and David took 1-2 overall. I didn't think a Thistle had ever won this race but found out the Czar had won it before. Pretty impressive to go 1-2.
Fleet Day: With winds out of the southeast at 8-10, temp 74, 7 Thistles in the water and no race committee in sight, it appeared to be a wasted day until Commodore Loy and his crew Leslie Anderson took one for the team and ran the races. Thanks guys. Loy set a nice long course to the first mark and gave the Thistles their own start. We got in 3 nice competitive races. Sailing were Kent and Tate, Guy and Jim, Nelson and Harry, Mike and Jack, and Sally and the fleet guy. Lars and Neely were out cruising.
