Flying Scot Fleet

Set aside 6 – 7 October…..GREAT SCOT REGATTA

There is a reason to sail almost every weekend for the next several weeks.  Therefore, no matter which weekend(s) you have open, you should plan to put your boat in the water.   Print out the attached schedule and put it somewhere you will see it.

Short email because I want you to do the following: (PLEASE)

Everyone should pick a BSC member that you would like to see on the water.  It can either be a favorite competitor, someone you haven’t seen at the club for a while, another skipper, best crew, anybody that has a Scot or wants to sail in a Scot.  Then call that person this week. (phone numbers are on the website in the members section.)

Here is why you are calling them:

1.    Make certain they are participating in the Great Scot on 6 – 7 October

a.     Doesn’t matter if they are crewing or skippering

b.    If they can’t sail, they can come out Saturday evening for the dinner

2.    Pick at least one other weekend to be at the lake with them

a.     Racing against someone close to your ability level would be good practice prior to the Great Scot (6 – 7 October)

b.    Maybe break in new crew on the distance race

c.     If you were going to be their crew, and they can’t sail, tell them you plan to put their Scot in the water and use it.  This means you need to contact someone else to find crew.

I do want input from our fleet members in regards to the Great Scot, and I have a couple of other requests, but I am leaving at that for this email so we can focus on calling at least one other member.

Flying Scot Fleet

Flying Scot Fleet 118 is scoring two series this sailing season, 1) The Year-Long Regatta, based on winning races. 2) The Championship series, based on participation.

Year-Long Regatta

This will be a high-point scoring system where the people with the most points win at the end of the year. Notice that I say “people” as opposed to boats or skippers because we score crew positions also. If you race, you are scored regardless of which position you occupied within the boat or whether you owned the boat. For simplicity we score crew and skippers the same. Because we are encouraging Scot participation, this will be scored among Scots sailing.

Example:There are twelve boats on the line, but only four Scots. All souls in the winning Scot receive 4 points, next one three points and so on. Members of the Scot fleet who crew on other types of boats receive no points. After all, we want to build a racing Scot fleet and they were not racing a Scot that weekend. (They still have fun and enjoy themselves though.)

This will be split into Sunday racing and Regatta racing, which may result in the same group of people, but not necessarily.

Championship Series

This one is based entirely on participation and not one whit on whether you win or lose. You participate in club activities for “membership points” based on one day’s participation. The people with the most “membership points” are rewarded for consistently taking part in BSC activities. Our fleet feels that activities other than racing are just as valuable to the club and that participation in those activities should be rewarded. You spend a day on the lake racing and you receive a point. Show up both days of a two-day regatta and you get two points. I have no written record of most of these activities, so please let me know what you have done. Note that we are talking about organized club activities. You may have spent a Wednesday afternoon washing your boat, and I’m glad you did, but you don’t get a membership point.

Examples of items to receive a point:

All awards will be determined and given after our Flying Scot Regatta.
