Flying Scot Fleet

Just come out and sail is the theme of our Scot Fleet 118 this year. That’s short, simple and easy to grasp. Just show up at the club and sail. The best way to increase your ability to sail is to sail.
CATEGORIES
Why do we see 39 Scots sitting around the parking area, but only 5 Scots in the water? There are two categories of reasons for that. The first category is the Scot owners who are inactive for whatever reason and aren’t going to sail. We can’t force them to sail so will make no attempt to entice them to sail. The second category is the Scot owners who do sail, but beg off on one weekend or another. That’s the category on which we will focus our fleet efforts this year. For those people, just come out and sail.
FLEET SHARING
Fleets at BSC are making a conscious effort this year to help one another increase participation by sharing crew among fleets. On our Scot Sundays, feel free to call upon members of the other fleets to fill out your boats. Likewise, be open to crew positions on other fleets for their days. The idea here is to put as many of a particular fleets’ boats in the water as possible on a given Sunday. Instead of one Scot with three Scot sailors, lets have three Scots on the water with borrowed crews. Just come out and we’ll work out the crews to sail.
LEARN TO SAIL PEOPLE
Many of BSC’s top skippers have culled crew from a Learn To Sail class. Are you not sailing because you can’t locate good crew? We have two litters each year from those classes. Come out for the “on-the-water” portions to get first pick. Else, ask me for names later and I’ll be happy to give you a list of people eagerly seeking crew positions. If you are a recent Learn To Sail graduate, let a fleet captain know you would like to sail and a spot will be found for you. The other option is to just show up at the club and see who needs crew. I’ve seen that done and it works. That’s called the “just come out and sail” option.
WEATHER
Forecasts are inaccurate. The weather at BSC doesn’t necessarily match the weather in Birmingham and it can change in the time it takes to drive out. You have to drive to BSC to know whether the weather will allow sailing. The worst outcome possible is that the weather is truly too bad to sail and you end up sitting at BSC, enjoying the $million view, and discussing sailing. Think about that before you decide against driving out to see. Just come out and sail.
